Icon is very proud to introduce Team GB and National Champion Jonathan Boyton, as an Icon Ambassador.
To ensure our products are meeting the needs of athletes and recreational paddlers alike, Icon is building a test team of top surfski and kayak paddlers from around the UK and Europe, as part of our product development and racing support programmes.
One of those paddlers we are immensely proud to be working with, is Team GB’s top flatwater sprint kayaker – Jonathan (Jon) Boyton.
Jon is a GB Men’s K1 1000m and K2 1000m sprint kayaking specialist, last year achieving two top 12 finishes in the World Cup series and 5th place at the Moscow European Championships. He is now training to compete at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, 2020.
Like any top athlete, Jon’s success didn’t come over night and has taken years of dedication and hard work. So how and where did it all begin? Many thanks to Mrs Boyton is probably a good place to start! Jon’s Mum signed him up for a canoe course at Royal Canoe Club when he was just 10 years old. The things you do to get your son out from under your feet and stop him arguing with his brothers!
By Jon’s own admission, he wasn’t very sporty and was quite unfit, but thanks to the coaches and friends he made at Royal, Jon stuck at canoeing and it has developed into his main passion. By the age of 16, Jon was selected for his fist international regatta at Sobeka in Belgium. Since then, he has been a regular face at European and World Championships.
For those of you with an interest in performance stats and what it takes to become a National 1000m Champion. Here are a few of Jon’s pb’s to measure yourself against:
K1 1000m 3 mins 27 secs / K1 500m 1 min 40 secs
Bench Press 1 RM 132.5kg / Bench Pull 1 RM 125kg
Jon has been working with Icon founder, Mark Ressel and the Icon team, to create apparel and equipment designed specifically around the competitive and performance paddler. A great example of this, is our range of performance spraydecks, including the gold-medal-winning deck, the ’Sprint Pro Rio Gold’ used in the Men’s K2 200M in Rio, 2016.
“Having exactly the right gear for the job is essential for focus and reaching your goals”, says Jon. “It’s been great working with Icon to develop kit that I can personally recommend to fellow peers and aspiring paddlers. Icon is exploiting new technological advances in fabric and equipment design, so racing kayakers are no longer compromised between performance and comfort… now you get the best of both worlds”.
Keep an eye out for Jon at regattas and on the racing circuit. Here’s hoping for more success in 2017!
