Yet again the Icon Classic delivered a memorable and technical downwind race. With a record 116 paddlers on the water, it really was a great spectacle and made even more special with the skillful multidisciplinary display of paddling. Combining the many skills of ocean paddling really is the way forward! Seeing an OC6 fly past Mortepoint was an amazing sight. It was also great to see OC1’s and a Prone Paddleboard mixing it up with the SUP’s this year. There was a time when you would only be able to put your hands on a couple of double ocean skis in the UK. This year we had 15 line up to battle it out. There is sure to be even more next year! Icon Classic titles changed hands, some were defended and records were broken. Marie Buchanan defended her SUP title whilst Paul Simmons took top honours from 2016 Champion Ollie Shilston. Chloe Bunnett finally got her hands on the elusive Icon Tiki by taking out the open ladies single ski title. 2013/2014 ICF Surfski World Champion, Sean Rice, set the bar to a whole new level by smashing the course record by 3 minutes! Winning in a time of 1:12:14 , meant that local star Scooby Lark had to take 2nd place for another year. Pete Holliday set the standard in the OC1 class by flying through the 11k course in a time of 1:03:31. The Welsh Warriors of Lloyd & Lewis Rosewell fought a hard battle to take out the open double ski title. It will take a good crew to beat them next year. There were cracking battles in the Masters Men category. Roy Fieldus finally took a strangle hold on the race with 1k to go, crossing the line in a time of 1:26:15. It’s always great to see new blood lining up for the challenge. Whilst James Bunney took out the ILS Spec Ski title, young gun Jake Liversedge took 3rd place and 4th place went to Alex Ward who became the youngest ever Classic competitor.
As ever, the Icon Classic would not be possible without the help of local volunteers and the safety crew of Saunton Sands Surf life Saving Club. A huge thank you to all helpers and competitors for making it another memorable year. See you in 2018!!!!!
